A pump control system that includes one or more pressure sensors and a drive controller is disclosed. The drive controller is configured to control the speed of a drive means which is directly or indirectly connectable to a pump, where the pump is part of a pumping circuit which includes a piping network. The pressure sensor is configured to measure a fluid pressure in a part of the piping network and generate a first signal representative of this fluid pressure, which is transmitted to the drive controller. The drive controller is configured to combine the first signal with at least one parameter selected from calculated shaft power, measured shaft power, calculated shaft torque, measured shaft torque and a fluid flowrate within at least part of the piping network, to generate an effective pressure setpoint which it is configured to use to adjust the speed of the pump.
