The pyrotechnic method for disposing non-pressurized hydrogen to portable or loaded fuel cells, comprises heating a solid pyrotechnic load (10) in a combustion chamber (1) at high pressure for generating hydrogen, flowing the generated hydrogen through an opening in a large volume tank (11), and expelling the non-pressurized hydrogen from the tank. The tank has low or high pressure, and is slackened, when the non-pressurized hydrogen is expelled. The heating is carried out by mechanical ignition. The pyrotechnic load consists of propellant elements and standard monolithic blocks or pads.
