An optical maser material consists of calcium tungstate in which 0.1-5%, preferably 0.14%, of the calcium ions have been replaced by trivalent neodymium. A crystal of the material may be grown by withdrawing slowly and rotating a seed crystal from a melt, and the crystal may be polished to be cylindrical with confocal spherical ends. The maser may be operated at room or liquid nitrogen temperature. The use of samarium-activated calcium fluoride at liquid helium temperatures is also discussed. |
