The ruler (100) has an electronic sensor device (120) for detecting length, and a display (110) e.g. LCD, for displaying the detected length. The device is arranged at a marking edge running in a longitudinal direction, and comprising sensor elements e.g. opto-electronic sensor elements. The ruler is arranged to continuously detect a line in the changing length and in a detection mode, where the length change is triggered by movement of a pin along the sensor device. The ruler is arranged to determine a distance between two points by the sensor device in another detection mode.
