PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the reliability of a chain tensioner by improving the durability of a check valve retainer. SOLUTION: The check valve 20 which allows only the flow of the operation oil from the outside of a cylinder into a pressure room 16 is composed of an annular valve seat 21, a check ball 22 installed in contact with/separably from the valve seat 21 and a cylindrical retainer 23 with a bottom formed by drawing, and the check ball 22 is retained by the retainer 23 and the operation oil moves through the opening formed in a pipe part 23A of the retainer 23. In the chain tensioner the opening of which is formed up to the bending position of the pipe part 23A to the bottom 23B of the retainer 23, the opening of the retainer 23A is formed by punching from the inside of the retainer 23 to its outside.
