RETRACTABLE WRITING INSTRUMENT

A writing utensil (1000) configurable between retracted and extended configurations is provided. The writing utensil (1000) includes a body (1030 & 1032) having an interior volume and an aperture (1012). A reciprocally movable nib assembly (1070) is located in the body (2030 & 1032) and includes a nib (1010) that, when in the extended configuration, traverses the aperture (1012). To prevent the nib (1010) from drying when in the retracted configuration, a sealing element seals the aperture (1012). The sealing element can be a sliding door (1220) that is attached to the nib assembly (1070) and overlays the aperture (1072). When the nib assembly (1070) is moved to the extended configuration, the sliding door slides (1220) in a manner that opens the aperture (1012). Additional components such as a seal component (1020), spring (296), compression ring and/or an O-ring (1028) may be utilized.
