Furnace for melting metals and for keeping them in the molten state. It includes a chamber 1 for charging with lumps of metal to be melted and a holding chamber 2 where the heat source is located, these two chambers being separated by a wall 3 pierced at its base, close to the sole 11, in order to bring the two chambers into communication, characterized in that the chimney 12 for venting to atmosphere the flue gases released in the holding chamber 2, where gas-burning or liquid-fuel-burning burners 6 operate, opens into the charging chamber 1, slightly above the level of the metal, and in that a channel 14, 16, opening into the holding chamber, serves to bring the flue gases into the charging chamber, the said channel being fitted, in the top part of the furnace, with a fan 17 which sucks up the flue gases and discharges them into the charging chamber, towards the level of the metal contained in this chamber. Application to aluminium, zinc and alloys or derivatives of these metals. <IMAGE>
