<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller capable of reducing the possibility that an engine reverses during a motor travel for a power transmission device for hybrid vehicle having the engine 8 and a second electric motor M2 as a driving power source for traveling. <P>SOLUTION: It is predicted that when the rotational resistance of the engine 8 is not more than a predetermined rotational resistance lower-limit value, the engine 8 easily rotates during the motor travel owing to variation in second electric motor rotation speed N<SB>M2</SB>and differential action of a power distributing mechanism 16, and then reverses as an up shift of an automatic speed change part 20 is made and the second electric motor rotation speed N<SB>M2</SB>decreases, so a rotation state limitation control means 102 performs control for restricting or inhibiting the motor travel, and performs control to start the engine 8 during the motor travel and to change the travel state from the motor travel to an engine travel.
