The compensator (18) has an outer part (20) comprising a guiding channel (22), and an inner part (24), which is movable for compensating a clearance between a cam shaft and a cam follower element of a valve gear. A hydraulic clearance compensation unit (32) is filled with a hydraulic medium, and has a working space closed by a check valve (34). A clearance compensation spring (38) subjects the inner part with spring force opposite to the outer part. A control device (40) adjusts a working path (A) of the inner part for compensating dimension tolerances of the valve gear.
