The gear train has a drive unit (1a), drive output units (2a, 3a) and free running units (4a, 5a) arranged such that a drive torque is selectively transferred over one of the drive output units depending upon a drive rotation direction, where the torque is initiated at the drive unit. The free running units are attached to the drive output units that exhibit different transmission ratios. The arrangement of the free running units defines a rotation direction of the output unit (3a). The free running units are formed in a switchable manner. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a planetary gear transmission.
