A method of dyeing slubbings, particularly of wool comprises applying a dye-liquor to the slubbing 18 e.g. by padder rollers 1, treating the slubbing with a controlled atmosphere of steam (preferably saturated in a chamber 19 in the upper end of a J-box 2 and passing the slubbing through a tubular fixing zone (e.g. the lower part of the J-box) maintained at a constant temperature by external heating means which are controlled independently of the saturated steam in chamber 19. As shown the heating means comprise a steam jacket 10 formed between the J-box and a surrounding insulating wall 6. Thermocouples 13,14 are placed in the J-box and steam jacket respectively and are associated with steam control means S in steam inlets 11. The steam treatment chamber 19 provided with an insulating wall 24 and an insulating lid 3a has steam inlets 15,16 with valves 15a, 16a to control the conditions in the chamber. These conditions may be observed by measuring instruments placed inside the chamber or by viewing the steam issueing from the opening in the lid 3a. Condensation traps 22, 23 are provided at the upper and lower ends of chamber 19. More than one slubbing may be treated in the J-box. In a further form common heating means in the form of an elongated steam jacket is provided for a series of adjacent J-boxes. A single pair of elongated padder rolls may be associated with each series of boxes or separate padder rolls may be provided above each J-box so that slubbings of different colours may be produced. Dimensions of the apparatus, treatment temperatures and speeds of forwarding the slubbing are given.</p> |
