The invention relates to a composition for artificially colouring the skin, comprising a physiologically acceptable medium containing: (a) at least one self-tanning agent; and (b) at least one colorant which can be obtained by reacting dehydroascorbic acid and/or one of the monomer derivatives thereof having formula (I) and/or one of the isomers of same having formula (I') and/or one of the polymer derivatives thereof, such as dimers having formula (II), with an amine compound. The invention also relates to a method for artificially colouring the skin, consisting of the application of a composition comprising a physiological acceptable medium containing: (a) at least one self-tanning agent; and (b) at least one colorant which can be obtained by reacting dehydroascorbic acid and/or one of the monomer derivatives thereof having formula (I) and/or one of the isomers of same having formula (I') and/or one of the polymer derivatives thereof, such as dimers having formula (II), with an amine compound.
