PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorption type steering column capable of optionally adjusting energy absorption capacity at secondary collision. SOLUTION: The energy absorption type steering column comprises an inner column 3; a bracket 8; an outer jacket 4 supported to the bracket 8 at a front side and telescopically retaining the inner column 3; an engagement mechanism supporting the outer jacket 4 at a rear side and moved from a column engagement position to a column release position; and an operation mechanism for operating the engagement mechanism.
