A temperature- and corrosion-resistant layer is formed in a gun barrel by incorporating in an ammunition cartridge one or more of the following substances: aluminium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, niobium, tantalum, and tungsten or by incorporating compounds of these substances, the compound being such that its melting point is of the same order or less than the combustion temperature of the propellant. The compounds may be aluminium fluoride, chromium fluoride, vanadium pentoxide, niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, potassium titanium fluoride, sodium tungstate, chromium nitrate, titanium oxide, and tungsten oxide. The substance may be dispersed in the propellant or attached to the inner surface of the cartridge or used either as a coating or impregnating a coating surrounding the propellant. A second substance such as an alkyd resin, paints or waxes, may be incorporated in the cartridge to produce a layer of cooler gas between the gun barrel and the propellent gases Specifications 801,375, 950,608 and 950,609 are referred to.
