A polarizer capable of forming a liquid crystal display unit and an electroluminescence display unit being small in display irregularities and providing excellent display characteristics. The polarizer contains a dichroic substance in a matrix having an in- plane phase difference of 950-1350 nm at a measuring wavelength not providing absorption. The measuring wavelength is preferably one at which the dichroic substance does not provide absorption, for example, 1000 nm.
