PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid a disruption of periodic transmission signal that takes place during a ranging period in an optical access system. SOLUTION: As a first method, during the ranging period, a transmission side suspends the transmission of periodic transmission signals and transmits signals in a collective manner when the ranging finishes, while a reception side previously buffers the signals for the ranging. As a second method, a ranging period is previously fixed, and the transmission side previously assembles a plurality of the periodic transmission signals for transmission. The reception side disassembles them for transmission. A transmission control is made such that the transmission period does not match the ranging period. Thus, the optical access system enables the signals that have to be transmitted periodically to be communicated without being disrupted even during the ranging operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
