An auxiliary magnetic layer (37) is formed on a soft magnetic underlayer (38) spreading over the surface of a substrate (31). A magnetic recording layer (36) is formed on the auxiliary magnetic layer (37). The auxiliary magnetic layer (37) has the axis of easy magnetization in the vertical direction perpendicular to the surface of the substrate (31). The magnetization is intensified in the magnetic recording layer (36) in the vertical direction perpendicular to the surface of the substrate (31). The auxiliary magnetic layer (37) serves to enlarge the magnetic field leaked out of the magnetic recording layer in the vertical direction.
