PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating waste water, in which a fluorine-containing surfactant and a nonionic surfactant in waste water are removed easily. SOLUTION: The method for treating waste water comprises a step (i) of adding an electrolyte to the liquid to be treated, which contains water, the fluorine-containing surfactant and the nonionic surfactant and has≤0.5 mass% fluorinated polymer concentration; and a step (ii) of heating the liquid to be treated through the step (i) so that the liquid to be treated is separated into a phase (1) in which the fluorine-containing surfactant and the nonionic surfactant are not contained substantially and a phase (2) in which the fluorine-containing surfactant and the nonionic surfactant are contained substantially.
