摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element, by which a sealing material having high adhesiveness is applicable by making an alignment layer formed on a substrate be efficiently and selectively removed. SOLUTION: The alignment layer is formed after applying for example a water-soluble resist to a region to which a sealing material is to be applied on the substrate with a method similar to application of the sealing material. In a cleaning step subsequent to the alignment layer formation, the alignment layer on the region to which the sealing material is to be applied is removed with a lift-off method based on removal of the water-soluble resist for example by cleaning with pure water. Afterwards, the substrates are bonded to each other via the sealing material while maintaining a desired gap in between, and a liquid crystal is sealed in the space with the desired gap.
