PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader and image forming apparatus employing the same, corresponding to acceleration, capable of reading both sides of a document in simple configuration and feeding the document under simple control. SOLUTION: In a document reader 101 with an automatic document feeder 112 and is capable of reading both sides of a document, as the automatic document feeder 112, there are provided a first feeding path 121 which circulates and guides the document from a placing tray 121 toward a document reading area 122 when reading only one side of the document; a second feeding path 132 for guiding the side of the document opposite to the placing tray 121 from the placing tray 121 toward the document reading area 122 in order to read the first one side of the document when reading both the sides of the document; and a third feeding path 133 for circulating the document in order to read the side opposite to the first read one side, and guiding the side opposite to the first read one side to the document reading area 122.
