PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of higher accurately discriminating a recording material type. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a recording paper discrimination sensor 200 which compares the optical characteristics of recording paper P with a predetermined threshold and discriminates the type of the recording paper P, the optical characteristics being obtained by receiving light applied to the recording paper P from LEDs 201 and 204 and detected by photo-transistors 202 and 203; a fixing unit 13 which has a fixing film 11, a pressure roller 12 and a heater 19 for heating the fixing film 11, thereby fixing toner to the recording paper P; and a CPU 102 which measures a quantity of power supplied to the heater 19 during the fixing of the toner by the fixing unit 13, compares the measured quantity of power with a quantity of power corresponding to the type of the recording paper P discriminated by the recording paper discrimination sensor 200, which is selected from quantities of power each of which is assigned to the predetermined type of recording paper P, and corrects the threshold based upon the result of the comparison.
