PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device in which a paper tray is moved by drive mechanisms and the paper tray is easily attached and detached by selectively engaging and disengaging the paper tray and the drive mechanisms and also provide a method of forming images. SOLUTION: This image forming device comprises: the paper tray 110 detachably attached to a tray installation part; position detection parts 162, 164 for detecting whether or not the paper tray reaches a predetermined position; the drive mechanisms 120, 220 driven when the position detection parts detect the predetermined position of the paper tray and driving the paper tray in the direction of being stored in or discharged from the tray installation part; and engagement selection parts 170, 122 for selecting the positions of the drive mechanisms between the position for engaging it with the paper tray and the position for releasing the engagement.
