Apparatus for brewing tea, coffee or the like comprises an upper body 1 with a nozzle communicating through a cock 2 with at least one pipe line for supplying liquid to the apparatus and a perforator 5, and a lower body constituting a cartridge holder 3 with an orifice in its lower end larger than a coaxial orifice formed in the cartridge 4. As shown in Fig. 1, a cartridge 4, of thin pressed metal sheet or plastic, is placed in the holder 3 with an inner perforated disc 7 upon which the tea leaves, coffee grounds or the like, are placed and covered by a lid 6. The upper body 1 is then lowered by links 12 until the perforator 5 perforates the lid 6, and a spring- loaded device 18 locks the two bodies together. The liquid is allowed to pass through holes 5a in the hollow perforator 5 into the cartridge 4 and the beverage flows out through the disc 7 into a receptacle. Alternatively, the upper body is fixed (Fig. 3, not shown) and the cartridge holder 103 is raised by a pivoting arm 106 which carries a knife 108 to sever the end of the cartridge 4 to form an orifice. An ejector 109 is provided to force the used cartridges 4 out of the cartridge holder 103. In an electrically operated apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown), a loaded cartridge holder 303 is pushed to the left thereby cutting a nipple 4f from the cartridge by a fixed cutter 308 and depressing a switch 315. This closes the energizing circuit of an electro-magnet 304 and a solenoid-operated valve 302 which thrusts plunger 305b downwardly and operates the lock mechanism 318 and the liquid supply. On breaking the circuit, by pulling the cartridge holder to the right, the used cartridge 4 is lifted out of the holder as plunger 305b is retracted, and released from the lock mechanism 318 to be dropped on to a deflector 301e and into a disposal bin. Alternatively, an independent cartridge holder 3 with a handle may be secured to a fixed upper body 1 by a bayonet coupling, Fig. 5, (not shown). The disc 7 may be provided with perforations of varying shapes and sizes depending on the beverage being made.
