[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for liquid or vapour treating, by centrifugal action, a web or filamentary material wound on a drum comprises a rotatable drum 1 having a perforated wall 9 rigidly mounted on a perforated hollow shaft 3 which feeds treating fluid into the drum and perforated flexible strips 11 provided over the whole of the inside of the wall 9, each strip being adjustably mounted so that the perforations may be aligned with (Fig. 7) or displaced from (Fig. 8) those in the associated portion of the wall 9; the effective perforated area of the drum may thus be adjusted e.g. for the treatment of webs of different widths or for regulating the amount of fluid flowing outwardly from the drum. As shown the drum comprises the perforated wall 9 rigidly mounted by perforated walls 2 and solid end walls on the perforated shaft 3, threaded stiffening rods 13 also being provided. Each strip 11 which may be of stainless steel or of plastics and be rubber covered, is in the form of a hoop having one cut therein. Wedgeshaped portions are mounted on the inside of the hoop at each edge of the cut and these cooperate with a further wedge 6 threaded on a countersunk screw 12 which passes through a funnel-shaped slot 8 extending circumferentially over a section of wall 9. In the unscrewed position shown in Fig. 6 each strip 11 may be adjusted to cover or align with the perforations in wall 9; it may then be locked in its adjusted position by tightening of the screw 12. The slots 8 associated with adjacent strips 11 are displaced by 90 degrees about the drum so that the drum is not unbalanced.</p> |
