The inertial properties of a rotating component (such as a gas turbine engine rotor eg. of the type in which the blades and disc are integral) are adjusted by introducing material (such as syntactic foam) into a cavity defined in a first portion (such as a fan blade) of the component. The component may be balanced by introducing material into diametrically opposed portions (such as respective fan blades) of the component, the configurations of the material being varied to provide the portions with different respective inertial properties. The portions of the component may each have a plurality of cavities, which may be selectively filled, or different material configurations may be achieved by varying the quantity or density of the material used (eg. by varying the proportions of different phases within the material or by pressurizing the material to different extents). |
