A dry, finely divided particulate inorganic pyrogenic solid having surface hydroxyl groups, including carbon black, is reacted with a halide or oxyhalide of a Group IVA, VA, VIA, VIIA or VIII metal at 0 to 300 DEG C. in either in inert organic liquid or using the halide or oxyhalide in the vapour phase near or dibuted with an inert oxygen free gas, continuously removing the hydrogen halide by product, thereby producing a product which is suitable as a component for an olefin polymerization catalyst (see Division C3). Specified examples of inorganic pyrogenic solids are alumina, titania, zirconia, silica, thoria and magnesia, silicates and aluminates and carbon black is included. A number of examples of the reaction in the liquid phase are given. Specifications 969,762, 969,763, 969,764, 969,765, 969,766 and 969,767 are referred to.ALSO:A catalyst suitable for polymerizing an up to C8 mono- or di-olefin or mixtures thereof is produced by reacting a finely divided inorganic pyrogenic solid including carbon black. The active hydrogen atoms of the OH Groups have been reacted with a Group IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa, VIII metal halide (see Division C1) with a Group I, II, III organometallic compound or hydride, which includes halogen containing and mixed metal compounds, numerous examples of which are given, together with use of the catalysts in polymerizations. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, styrene, isoprene, or butadiene and mixtures such as butene-1 and isoprene. Specifications 969,762, 969,763, 969,764, 969,765, 969,766 and 969,767 are referred to.
