The links of a coal cutter chain are joined by elements each in the form of a ball mounted on a projecting stem, one link at each joint having a part-spherical socket to embrace the ball and the other being forked to receive the stem. In Fig. 1, the links are hermaphroditic, each having at one end fork limbs 26, 27 attached by cross-pins 29 to the ball stem 28 of one joint and at the other end a socket eye 25 within which spherically-surfaced detachable liner elements 30, 31 embrace the ball 32 of the next joint. The cutter boxes 33 are mounted on the fork limbs 27. In Fig. 3, ball-carrying links 44 alternate with stem carrying links 40, the latter carrying the cutter boxes 41. In this form the ball stems 47 are obliquely oriented and the fork ends are sloped at 50 and 51. Specification 235,839 is referred to.
