Heading G1C A case rotated gyroscope comprises a rotor 11 supported by a fluid bearing externally of a spherical member of an inner case 20 with three degrees of angular freedom relative thereto, the inner case 20 forming a fluid tight seal between the rotor 11 and an outer case 30 in which the inner case 20 is rotated about the rotor spin axis is 22 by a motor 49 mounted on the outer case, a motor 15 mounted on the inner case to drive the rotor about the axis 22, and means 28, 29 for torquing the rotor to average out error torques normal to the axis 22 which would give rise to precession of the rotor. The rotor 11 is mounted on a gas bearing 12 formed between it and a spheri cal member 14 secured to the inner case 20. The rotor carries a conductive sleeve 11a and interaction between this sleeve and the motor 15 causes rotation of the rotor. The rotor also has a torquer sleeve 11b mounted for rotation between core portions 29a, 29b of a torquer coil 28 carried by the outer case 30. The coil 28 is excited so that on rotation of the rotor eddy currents are generated in the sleeve 11b through a septum 33 forming part of the inner case 20 to compensate for errors. A rotatable stop member 36 limits motion of the rotor about axes normal to its spin axis 22. A pick off plate assembly 42 having pairs of conductive pick off plates insulated from each other. These plates provide a pick off signal sensing relative motion between the rotor 11 and the inner case about a pair of axes normal to each other and to the axis 22. Each pair of plates is connected to a separate pick off transformer 55, and the output of each of these transformers is connected to a separate pick off resolver winding 60a attachedto the inner case 20. The signals in the windings 60a are coupled to a resolver winding 60b attached to the outer case 30, and the generated signals in the winding 60b are fed to a phase sensitive demodulator, the transformers 55 being fed with signals from a reference oscillator as well as those from the pick off plates, and the demodulator gives an output in accordance with relative motion between the rotor 11 and the outer case 30 about the two axes normal to each other and normal to the axis 22 previously referred to. Bearings 51 are provided between the inner and outer cases. |
