<p>In a process for refining iron the solid part of the charge, e.g. scrap, ore and limestone is introduced into a stationary rotatable device, which is then set in rotation prior to the addition of liquid charge, the speed being such that the molten charge has no contact with the central region of the bottom of the vessel, which may be used for discharging the product. <PICT:0979605/C6-C7/1> Initially the solid charge, and if necessary also the liquid, may be heated by the combustion of a suitable fuel, preferably with oxygen, the fuel supply then being cut off and the metal refined by the action of oxidizing gas. By reducing the rotational speed, slag and then metal may be discharged from the vessel through the basal orifice. Samples for analysis may also be extracted in this way. A suitable form of apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 and includes vessel 5 which is caused to rotate about a vertical axis by rollers 2 and 4 and which is equipped with fuel and oxygen nozzles 6 and 7.</p> |
