993,403. Axle boxes. GEORGE BLAIR & CO. Ltd. Sept. 25, 1961 [Sept. 26, 1960], No. 32990/60. Heading F2A. An axle box constructed to facilitate heat dissipation by the passage of cooling air comprises a web 2 forming an abutment for the upper half of a journal bearing 3, an outer transverse end wall 5 and an inner end flange 6. Above the web 2 is the seating 11 for the wagon spring. A convergent-divergent passage 17, 18 is formed between the web 2 and the seating 11 by a depending partition 19 which may be of V-form or downwardly convex. The passage 17, 18 may be divided by ribs 25 into passages 21 to 24. The end walls 13, 14 may be provided with a triangular opening 26 which forms a tunnel which extends longitudinally of the axle-box. Cooling of the axle-box is achieved by the passage of air through the convergent-divergent passage and tunnel portion, produced by the motion of the railway vehicle. Means 28 and 29 are provided to minimize the entry and permit the outflow of water entering the tunnel portion. |
