A lubricant (fluid, semi-fluid, or grease) comprises a major amount of a lubricating oil and 2 to 50% wt. of a soap-salt thickener, said thickener comprising alkaline earth metal salts of 5 to 20 molar proportions of C2 to C4 fatty acid and one molar proportion of iso-oleic acid. The latter acid may be in the form of commercial iso-oleic acid (e.g. "Emery 3286-S" acid) which contains mainly iso-oleic (i.e. elaidic) acid. The C2 to C4 acid may be acetic, propionic, or butyric, and in the case of acetic acid, the anhydride may be used to form the salt. The alkaline earth metal may be calcium, strontium, barium, or magnesium, and the libricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, including diesters, complex esters, polysilicones, formals and carbonates. Optional additives mentioned are alkaline earth metal soaps of C6 to C30 fatty acids other than elaidic acid, alkaline earth metal salts of phosphoric, nitric and hydrochloric acids, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, sodium nitrite, polyethylene, polypropylene, and carbon black. |
