PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner capable of shortening a restart time of a cleaning operation by executing compression and dust removal operations suited to the amount of collected dust and shortening the compression and dust removal time executed after stopping an electric blower. SOLUTION: This vacuum cleaner has: the electric blower 2 for generating a suction force; a dust collector 4 having coarse dust filters 28 and 29 for collecting sucked coarse dust and a fine dust filter 43 for collecting fine dust; a compression means 55 compressing by pushing the dust accumulated in the coarse dust filters 28 and 29; a dust removal means 57 scraping off the fine dust stuck to the fine dust filter 43 and removing the dust; a collected-dust amount detection means for detecting the amount of the collected dust in the coarse dust filters 28 and 29; and a control means 52 varying times of the compression operation and the dust removal operation executed after stopping the electric blower 2 according to the detection signal indicating the amount of the collected dust from the collected-dust amount detection means 59.
