PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for distinguishing bacteria, which determines fluorescent-labeled bacteria, even in shape defects. SOLUTION: The method for distinguishing bacteria comprises irradiating a specimen with a light to produce fluorescence in the specimen; imaging an image containing fluorescence from the specimen; extracting a fluorescent region from the image; calculating the position of the center of gravity of the region; calculating the contour of the region; calculating a distance from the position of the center of gravity to a contour point to form the contour for each contour point; calculating an angle between the direction from the position of the center of gravity to the contour point and a fixed direction for each contour point; calculating a curve exhibiting the relation between the distance and the angle, based on the distance and the angle at each contour point; calculating the difference in distance between the curve and an ideal curve having a fixed shape for each angle; calculating a correlation value which exhibits correlation between the curve and the ideal curve, based on the difference in distance; and distinguishing whether the specimen is bacteria, based on the correlation value.
