An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to prevent rapid decrease of the amount of refrigerant by increasing the amount of refrigerant stored in an accumulator. A control method for an air conditioner includes the steps of determining whether a difference between the condensation temperature of refrigerant and the liquid pipe temperature of refrigerant is in a set value range(S20), controlling an expansion valve according to the degree of suction superheat if so(S22), or reducing an opening degree value of the expansion valve if not(S24).
