PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can obtain a read-out image of higher quality by suppressing the impact of noise generated when turning on a light source, and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises an LED light source 102a for irradiating an original 101 with light, a line sensor 102b for reading the image information of the original 101 by receiving the light reflected from the original 101 irradiated with light from the LED light source 102a, an image memory 107 for storing the image information, a logic section 102c for outputting the image information obtained by the line sensor 102b, and a read control section 106 for controlling lighting on/off of the LED light source 102a wherein the read control section 106 controls the LED light source 102a to light at the output timing of an invalid pixel to be outputted before a valid pixel included in the image information out of the image information output timings of the logic section 102c.
