A rotor 1 of a permutation switch for coding apparatus comprises an insulating wheel having recesses 7b on one side in which contacts 9 (shaped as shown) may be clipped and recesses at a smaller radius on the other side in which radially slidable contacts 10 may be inserted. Each contact 9 is connected to a respective contact 10 by a conductor 13 long enough to permit rearrangement of the contacts as required for coding. The contacts 10 are urged outwardly by a ring 12 of resilient material. A cover 17, which may be threaded on to rotor 1, retains contacts 10 and ring 12 in position, and a disc 16 secures the rigid contacts 9 in position and seals the compartment 15 against dust. Rotors 1 are assembled such that contacts 10 on one rotor co-operate with contacts 9 on the adjacent rotor (as shown in Fig. 5), and projections 4 on the edges of the rotors facilitate manual rotation thereof.
