Density and gas content of drilling mud - measured in underwater test equipment and recorded at surface

Appts for determining the props. of drilling mud in an underwater source in which the mud flows downwards through the drilling pipe string and upwards through the annular space between this and a borehole riser or liner pipe, comprises (a) a sample unit connected underwater to the riser pipe for taking a sample of the drilling mud in the annular space, (b) a mud weighing device connected to the sample unit for the measuring the density of the mud sample taken, (c) a read-out element above the surface of the water connected to the device for measuring the underwater mud density. Pref. the measuring device is a differential pressure transducer connected to vertically spaced points on the sample unit.
