Self-hardening phenolic resins free of unreacted phenol and formaldehyde and generating only traces of formaldehydes during hardening are prepd. by reacting (A) phenol-free novolacs contg. methylene bridges and a not predominantly ortho structure with (B) formaldehyde, in the presence of from 0.15 to the equiv. wt. of basic catalysts, based on phenolic OH gps., at 20-70 degrees pref. 40-60 degrees C to form hydroxy-methyl cpds. whose phenolic or alcoholic OH gps. are opt. etherified.
