The water in an aq. bitumen, emulsion does not react with the iron dust, because the bitumen and/or the emulsifier apparently covers the surface of the dust and makes it inactive, even when the emulsion contains up to 75% water. In an example a hard, high vacuum bitumen, softening point R + B = 85-95 degrees C., is used in an aq. emulsion contg. 25 wt.% of the bitumen. 6 wt.% of the emulsion is used with the iron dust which therefore contains 1.5 wt.% of the bitumen. The briquettes obtd. met the required compression strength of 150 kp. Due to the low amt. of bitumen used, the briquettes only contained 0.09% sulphur.
|
