1488546 Seaming non-metallic sheet material BORG-WARNER CORP 22 Oct 1975 [27 Nov 1974] 43409/75 Heading B5K Two parts 10, 14 of a thermoplastic resin composition comprising 40 to 80% by weight of polyphenylene sulphide and 60 to 20% by weight of glass fibres are ultrasonically welded together, the surface of one part which is to be welded to a surface of the other part being thermally formed to have exposed glass fibres. Preferably, both surfaces to be welded have exposed glass-fibres. A specified composition comprises polyphenylene sulphide containing 30 to 50% by weight glass-fibres. More particularly, parts having glass-fibre-rich surfaces are injection moulded from a 40% glass-fibrefilled polyphenylene sulphide resin employing a barrel temperature of 570‹ F. and a mould temperature of 150‹ F. As shown, a pump impeller comprises two glass-fibre-filled polyphenylene sulphide parts 10, 14. The part 10 has a central hub 11 and arcuate vanes 12 on a surface 16. The vanes 12 have energy directing surfaces 13 moulded thereon. The part 14 has a circular opening defined by a flange 15, The parts 10, 14 are assembled with the surfaces 13 in contact with the lower surface of the part 14, are clamped together and are welded ultrasonically. |
