A hollow rotary cutter particularly for removing coal from a vertical face in a mine is mounted in a horizontal hollow arm (1) through which the cut material is conveyed rearwards. The cutter (4) is semicircular in shape, rotating inside a semicircular housing (2) attached to the top of the arm. As the cutter rotates about a vertical axis (5) on the front edge of the arm, cut material collects behind a fixed plate (6) inside. This then pushes the material through an opening (7) in the top of the arm, to fall inside. This discharge action can be assisted by a piston. To make the cuts easier, steam can be injected into the ground through jets.
|
