The passage has a floor plate 37 positioned on a base plate 34. In floor plate 37 there are sifting holes 16 which have one lateral side formed by adjustable plates 33. Coins are fed along the passage by a propelling belt 8 that comprises two parallel belt elements. Each element has a round tubular shape and is made of a material that is soft and highly elastic, e.g. rubber or synthetic rubber. Passage perimeter members 15 are rotatably supported and form a perimeter defining part. Fig. 8 shows the path of a coin along the passageway. As a coin moves around a disc 15 it is positively and accurately positioned relative to the respective sifting hole 16. The lateral movement of the coin deforms the elements of belt 8 which thus exert a sideways force on the coin and return it to its original path when the respective disc 15 is passed. The possibility of belt 8 also caters for coins of different thicknesses, deforming upwards and thus exerting a downward force on the coin. This provides a positive force to flip a coin through its respective sifting hole 16. The discs 15 may be replaced by fixed members or one fixed member whereby the belt is displaced for the whole length of travel of a coin past the sifting holes. In a modification, Figs. 15-18 (not shown), rollers guiding the driving belt are positioned so that it follows a zig-zag path. This moves a coin from side to side of the passage and the sifting holes are positioned accordingly.
