Novel amines of the formula (I) <IMAGE> wherein R denotes methyl or ethyl, are prepared by an ether formation reaction. A compound of the formula (V) <IMAGE> or its metal phenolate is reacted either with a compound of the formula (VI) <IMAGE> wherein X<1> denotes a hydroxyl group and Z a reactive esterified hydroxyl group or X<1> and Z together form an epoxy group, or with a compound of the formula (VII) <IMAGE> The amines are obtained in the form of free bases or of therapeutically acceptable acid addition salts. The compounds of the formula (I) possess valuable pharmacological properties; for example, they exhibit cardioselective ss-receptor-blocking properties whilst retaining activities which are useful in the treatment of Angina pectoris.
