Refractory fibres are prepared by a process comprising preparing a concentrated viscous solution containing between 40% and 48% by weight (based on the refractory metallic oxide) of refractory metallic oxide-yielding material, forming fibres from the material and substantially eliminating constituents of the refractory metallic oxide-yielding material other than the metallic oxide by firing at successively higher temperature below the fusion temperature of the metallic oxide. Oxides referred to are zirconia, zircon, magnesia, thoria, hafnia, ythia and alumina. Zirconia fibres may contain up to 10% by weight of another metallic oxide and crystal structure stabilizer. Examples relate to production of (a) zirconia fibres from zirconium acetate with calcium acetate as stabilizer, (b) zircon fibres from zirconium acetate and colloidal silica, (c) zirconia fibres from ammonium zirconium lactate, (d) zirconia fibres from trioxodizirconium chloride. The fibres may be formed by spinning, drawing, extruding, blowing, or combinations of these processes.
