Nicotinic acid derivatives and process for the preparation thereof

Novel compounds of the Formula I wherein X represents an oxygen atom or an imino group and R represents a carboxyl group or an alkoxycarbonyl group, are prepared by reacting a compound of the Formula II with nicotinic acid, a nicotinoyl halide or nicotinic anhydride. Methyl - 5 - (1,2,3,4 - tetrahydroxybutyl)-furan (or pyrrole)-3-carboxylic acid and alkyl esters thereof are prepared by reacting the appropriate hexose or hexosamine with an alkyl acetoacetate and if desired, hydrolysing the resulting ester to the free acid.
