PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a precursor of cis-jasmine, etc., in high yield, by isomerizing dihydrofuran with a VIII-group transition metal hydride complex, reacting the product with an alcohol, and hydrolyzing the resultant tetrahydrofuran compound. CONSTITUTION:A dihydrofuran compound of formulaI(R is alkyl or aryl; X is H, alkoxycarbonyl, alkyl or aryl) is used as the starting material, and is isomerized with a VIII-group transition metal hydride complex[e.g. dihydrido(carbonyl)tris(triphenylphosphine)-ruthenium]to obtain the dihydrofuran compound of formula II, which is converted to the tetrahydrofuran compound of formula III with an alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc.) and then hydrolyzed to obtain the gamma-ketocarboxylic acid of formula IV and its ester. |
