A ski brake is described having brake arms which are mounted laterally or on the ski and are pivotable about an axis directed substantially perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the ski. The brake arms are extended beyond their fulcrums or axes of rotation and are connected to a U-shaped hoop above the ski surface. This hoop is brought into an approximately horizontal position by the heel of a ski boot when entering the ski binding. The ends of the brake arms lying above the ski surface are connected via an elastic member which, when the hoop is trodden down onto the ski surface, is stretched by means of a displacement member arranged there. The expansion of this elastic member causes a retraction of the free ends of the brake arms towards the central axis of the ski, so that these brake arms come to rest within the outline of the ski surface during movement.
