PURPOSE:To absorb handwritten deformation with a small number of dictionary patterns and to recognize a character by expanding and contracting nonlinearly an input pattern in both horizontal and vertical directions to secure the matching with the dictionary pattern. CONSTITUTION:A character pattern supplied from a character input device 1 is stored in a pattern memory 2 and then binary coded by a binary coding circuit 3. Then the directivity is given to each picture element forming character parts from a direction detecting circuit 9. When a picture element is viewed from many directions, the direction where the picture element forming the largest number of character parts exists is detected and the directivity is given to this detected direction. A pattern matching circuit 10 gives the matching between the dictionary pattern and the character pattern to which the directivity is given by the circuit 9. Thus the characters are recognized.
