PURPOSE:To detect the position of cutting edge during the course of grinding operation, by projecting a light ray onto an edge generating surface of a work to be ground, picking up its reflected ray is an image pick-up apparatus and detecting a position of edge by an output of said apparatus. CONSTITUTION:When light rays are projected onto cutting edge surfaces 2a, 2b of work cut longitudinally from light sources 4a, 4b the ray projected to surfaces 2a, 2b are reflected to the 4a, 4b sides of the light source and only a ray projected on to the surface 2C is reflected upward. It is because that the cutting edge 2C is not formed into a perfect acute angle and it is provided with a slight chamfer or a flat shape and the reflected ray of the tool edge 2C is projected into an image pick-up apparatus 8 through a top lens 6 and here, the image is picked up. An output signal of the image pick-up apparatus 8 is supplied to a position detector 10 and basing on this output signal, the position of the tool edge 2C is detected. By this method, a position of the edge of ground portion can immediately be obtained and by the detecting output, a position of the grinding stone can be changed automatically. |
