Method of preparing tetrahalobenzene compounds

Tetrahalobenzene compounds of the formula (IX): <IMAGE> (IX) in which each X is independently chloro or fluoro, are prepared by electrolyzing in a protic medium a compound of the formula (IV): <IMAGE> (IV) in which X has the meaning already given, each R is independently C1-4 alkyl and A is a radical capable of forming an anion A-. The compounds are useful in the synthesis of insecticides.
